Mercury Books connects to your Mercury accounts automatically and to a set of outside services so your sales, fees, payroll, and external bank activity post to your books without manual entry. This article lists what's supported and what each connection brings in.
What's supported
| Connection | What it brings into Books |
|---|---|
| Mercury accounts | Every checking, savings, and credit account in your organization, including closed accounts. Connected automatically, with continuous auto-reconciliation |
| External bank accounts | Transaction feed from an outside checking or savings account, linked through Plaid |
| External credit cards | Transaction feed from an outside credit card or other account, linked through Plaid |
| Stripe | Sales, refunds, processing fees, taxes, and payouts |
| PayPal | Sales, refunds, fees, taxes, and payouts |
| Gusto | Completed payroll runs, posted as balanced journal entries |
| Mercury Invoicing | Your invoices and customers, with payment matching synced both ways |
| Mercury Bill Pay (Cash-basis only) | Your bills and vendors with payment matching synced both ways |
| Manual accounts | Anything you bring in by CSV, for accounts that can't be linked |
What each one gives you
Mercury accounts. Nothing to set up. Transactions arrive with their notes and receipts from your banking dashboard attached, and reconciliation happens continuously in the background.
External bank and credit accounts. Linked through Plaid. Books pulls the transaction feed from your entry start date forward and creates a source account for it in your chart of accounts.
Stripe and PayPal. After you map your revenue, fee, and refund ledgers, sales and fees post to a dedicated account for that processor. When a payout lands in your bank account, Books links the two sides so revenue isn't counted twice. See our Using Stripe with Mercury Books and Using PayPal with Mercury Books articles.
Gusto. Completed payroll runs post as balanced journal entries with wages, taxes, and reimbursements mapped to the right accounts. Works on both cash and accrual. See our Using Gusto with Mercury Books article.
Mercury Invoicing. Once you've mapped your ledgers, invoices sync between Books and Invoicing in near real time. You can edit invoice details from inside Books, and a payment matched in either product shows as matched in both.
What isn't supported
- Other payroll providers. Gusto is the only payroll integration today
- Other payment processors. Stripe and PayPal are supported; other processors aren't
- Stripe Connect and Stripe Express accounts. Only your own Stripe account's activity is brought in
- Stripe subscriptions. Books reads Stripe transactions, not subscription records, so there's no revenue recognition from Stripe billing
- Non-USD accounts and invoices. Books works in USD
- QuickBooks Online, Xero, and NetSuite. Books is an accounting system in its own right rather than something that syncs to another one. See our Using Mercury Books alongside another accounting system article
FAQs
Where do I connect these integrations?
All of them from Accounts > Add account in Books. See our Connecting accounts and integrations article.
Does Books sync out to QuickBooks or Xero?
No. Books is your accounting system, not a feed into another one.
Can I connect two Stripe accounts?
Yes, to add a second Stripe account go to ‘Add account’ on the Accounts page in Books, and go through the Stripe flow.
My bank isn't on the list.
Add a manual account and import transactions with a CSV. See our Importing transactions with a CSV article.
