Multi-device authentication adds an extra layer of security to your Mercury account by asking you to review and approve certain actions from the Mercury mobile app.
What is multi-device authentication?
When multi-device authentication is turned on, Mercury may ask you to review and approve certain actions, such as large payments, from the Mercury mobile app. This helps us make sure the action was initiated by you.
Why is it needed?
If a computer is compromised by malware, an attacker may be able to start actions from a device that appears trusted. Multi-device authentication protects against this by requiring a secondary confirmation from a separate trusted device: your phone with Mercury’s mobile app.
This makes it harder for someone to move money without your knowledge, even if they gain access to your computer.
Note: Mercury Support will never ask you to confirm a payment you don’t recognize
How does it work?
When you initiate a high-risk action (e.g. large payment) on web, Mercury will ask you to review and confirm it from the mobile app:
- Start the payment on web
- Mercury sends a push notification to your phone
- Tap the push notification to open the authentication request
- You can also find the request in your Task list
- Review and verify the request details, such as the recipient name, amount, and bank account numbers
- If you recognize the payment, confirm it and return to web to finish the payment
- If you do not recognize the payment, decline the request and take the following actions to secure your account
- Initiate a temporary lock/freeze on your account to prevent any unauthorized actions.
- Immediately change your password and logout of all other active sessions
- Reach out to Mercury’s Customer Support team if you have any other concerns
