Mercury Books is the software you keep your books in. It records, categorizes, reconciles, and reports — and our support team can help you with any of that. What we can't do is make accounting decisions for you. This article sets out where the line sits, so you know what to bring to us and what to bring to an accountant.
What we can help with
- Finding your way around. Where a page or setting lives, how to do something in the product
- Setup. Walking through your entry start date, chart of accounts, connected accounts, and integrations
- Access. Permissions, roles, getting your bookkeeper or accountant in
- Connections. Linking accounts, fixing a broken feed, working out why an integration isn't syncing
- Missing or unexpected data. Why transactions aren't appearing, why a balance looks off, where something posted
- Requests we handle for you. Changing your accounting basis, replacing your chart of accounts, adjusting your entry start date
What we can't help with
Mercury doesn't provide accounting or tax advice. These are the questions to take to a qualified accountant or bookkeeper:
- Which accounting method to use. We'll explain how cash and accrual behave in Books. Which one is right for your business depends on your circumstances
- How to categorize a transaction. We'll show you how to categorize and how to set up rules. Which account a given transaction belongs in is an accounting judgment
- Whether something is recorded correctly. We can explain what Books did and why. Whether it's right for your books is a question for your accountant
- Anything tax-related. Books is not a tax product. Your bookkeeping is an input to your tax filing, and Mercury doesn't prepare or file returns
- Whether your books are ready for a filing, an audit, or diligence. That's a professional judgment about your specific situation
This applies no matter which path you're on. If you're doing your books yourself, it's worth knowing up front: we can help you use the product well, but we can't stand in for an accountant.
If you’re looking for an accountant or bookkeeper to help you make these decisions, Mercury Books can introduce you to one from our set of trusted accountant partners.
FAQs
I'm doing my own books. Can support tell me how to categorize a transaction?
We can tell you how the categorization works and what Books proposed. Which account it belongs in is your call or your accountant's.
Can Command give me accounting advice?
No. Command explains how Books works and what your numbers show. It doesn't give accounting, tax, or legal advice.
I don't have an accountant. Can Mercury find me one?
