Mercury Payroll lives inside your existing Mercury account — there's no separate app or login. Setup walks you through confirming your company details, choosing how often you pay people, picking the account that funds payroll, and signing your tax authorizations.
To get started, use the account switcher from your lefthand menu to switch from Banking to Payroll or visit mercury.com/payroll to get started.
Before you start
- You'll need a Mercury Business account. Payroll funds from a Mercury account, and external bank accounts aren't supported at launch.
- You'll need an EIN. Payroll can't be set up with an EIN application still pending.
- The person setting up payroll becomes your signatory by default — the person authorized to sign offer and tax documents and manage payroll funds. If you're not authorized to sign for your company, ask an admin who is to complete setup.
What you'll be asked
- Confirm your company details. Your company’s legal name, filing address, entity type, and EIN are filled in from your Mercury banking* application. You’re responsible for ensuring these details are accurate. Review them carefully before continuing, as incorrect entity information may result in delayed state tax registrations and refiling fees. If anything needs correcting, select “I need to update something” to make edits or contact our support team.
- Assign your company officers. Pick who holds the CEO, CFO, and Secretary roles from your existing admins and owners. One person can hold more than one role, and you can add someone who isn't on the list, as long as they have been through a KYC process (not every admin will automatically qualify).
- If you don't know who to assign, check your articles of incorporation to verify details.
- Choose a pay frequency. Weekly (Fridays), every two weeks (every other Friday), twice a month (the 15th and last day), or monthly (the last day of the month). Twice a month is selected by default.
- Pick your first payday. You'll see four valid dates based on the frequency you chose. Mercury handles banking-day math and quarter-end timing for you, so there's nothing to calculate.
- Pick your funding account. Your Mercury primary checking account* is selected by default, and you can choose a different Mercury account or create a new one.
- Review and sign your authorizations. The last step is signing documents and terms of service.
After you activate
Your application goes to review, and you'll land on your Payroll home page. Approval typically takes one business day and you'll see a pending state until it clears. Note that there are certain industries that are supportable on banking but may not be supportable for payroll.
From there, your home page shows your setup status, your pay schedules, and any remaining tasks. You can start adding your team or wait until approval to add them.
