Creating and sending payment links

Payment links are an easy, informal way to collect money from customers. Instead of creating a full invoice, you can generate a quick link and share it with a customer when you just need a simple, lightweight way to get paid.

How to create a payment link

  • Go to the Invoicing tab in your Mercury dashboard
  • Click +Request Money in the top left

1. Add a customer

  • Choose an existing customer from the dropdown, or select Add new customer
  • You’ll need to enter a name and email (personal or business)
  • Optionally, include a mailing address

2. Select Request money without an invoice

  • You can create an invoice or request money using a standalone payment link
  • To create a payment link, Request money without an invoice

Fill out payment link details

3. Add the total amount you’d like to request

  • Payment links are designed for quick, one-off requests, so they don’t support line items or catalog selections like invoices do.

4. Add an optional memo for your customer

  • You can write a message to your customer that will be visible to them on the payment link
  • Additionally, you can add attachments for your customers

5. Select payment methods

  • Manual Transfers (ACH/ Wire), Pay with Mercury, and International Wires are always available to your customers
  • If you have credit card payments setup via our Stripe integration, you can optionally enable or disable this per payment link
  • If you’re on our Pro plan, you’ll see an option to Accept ACH debit

6. Choose your destination account

  • Select the account into which your customer payment will be deposited if they pay you through domestic wire, international wire (non-USD supported), ACH, or credit card
  • Payment links use a secure virtual account number to protect your account from unauthorized withdrawals. Showing real account numbers on payment links are not available
    • Additional payment links or invoices sent to the same customer will display the same virtual account number

7. Create and send

  • Select Create & Send to automatically send the payment link to your customers email address. You can also copy a shareable link.
  • Payment links will continue to remain active until you either cancel it or the customer pays the link.
  • All payment links and invoices can be viewed and managed from your Invoicing page

What your customer sees

Your customer will be given a standalone link via email. The email will contain: the requestor's name, payment amount, and other info you included when creating the payment link.

  • If your customer also has a Mercury account, they'll be able to send via Pay with Mercury and submit a payment immediately
  • If they don't have a Mercury account, they'll be provided with various payment options including manual transfers and international wires
  • If you enabled ACH Debit or Credit Card options on the payment link, these will also be available to your customers

Managing payment links

All payment links and invoices can be viewed and managed from your Invoicing page

When you select a payment link, a detail panel opens where you can take actions like sending reminders, marking the link as paid, editing it, or canceling it. You can also view a timeline of all activity related to the link.

If you’ve sent both invoices and payment links, you can filter by “Type” and select Payment links to view only those.
