You can add more than one email to your Mercury profile and log in with any of them.
This article explains how to add and remove emails, which email is used for logging in, security, and notifications, what admins can see, and how emails work when you belong to more than one account. You can manage your emails on the web or in the Mercury app for iOS and Android.
Email types at a glance
| Email type | What it’s used for | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Log in emails | Log in to Mercury and reach all your accounts | Every verified email on your profile is a log in email. |
| Security email | 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) reset codes, password resets, account recovery, security notices, and replies from our support team | Exactly one per profile. It’s the same in every account. |
| Notification email | Notifications for one accounts | One per account. By default, it’s the email you were invited with. |
One email can have more than one type. For example, the same email can be your security email and the notification email for your business.
Logging in
You can log in with any verified email on your profile. Your password and passkey are the same no matter which email you use.
After you log in, you’ll land in the account you used last. To go to a different one, select the account switcher in the upper left corner.
Adding and verifying an email
On the web
- Go to Settings, then select Profile
- Under Emails, select Edit emails
- Select Add email and enter the email
- Select Save
In the Mercury app
- Go to Settings and select your profile
- Select Edit
- Under Login emails, select Add email, enter the email, and confirm
- Save your changes: select Done on iOS or Save on Android
You can add up to 5 emails at a time. You may be asked to confirm it’s you before your changes are saved.
Next, check the inbox for each new email. Open the verification email from Mercury and select the link.
Until you verify an email, it shows Needs verification. You can’t log in with it, or choose it as your security or notification email, until it’s verified.
Note: Verification links expire after 30 days. To get a new one, find the email in your list of emails, open its options, and select Resend verification email.
You can’t add an email that:
- Is already on your profile or on another Mercury profile
- Has a pending invite to one of your accounts
- Is used for receipt forwarding. See Receipt forwarding below
Removing an email
- Open your list of emails:
- On the web: go to Settings › Profile and select Edit emails
- In the app: go to Settings, select your profile, then select Edit
- Select the email, then select Delete login email. For an email you haven’t verified yet, select Delete
- Confirm, then save your changes
You can remove any of your emails, with some exceptions:
- Your security email. Choose a different security email first, then remove the old one. That also means you can’t remove your only email.
- A notification email. You can remove it, but we’ll warn you first: that account's notifications will go to your security email instead, and its admins will be able to see your security email.
Security email
Your security email is where we send anything related to keeping your profile safe: 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) reset codes, password resets, account recovery, and security notices.
Note: Replies from our support team also go to your security email. You can write to us from any verified email, but if you write from a different one, you’ll get an automatic reply letting you know where we’ll respond.
Your security email is also the backup for your notification emails. If you remove an account's notification email, that account's notifications go to your security email.
Changing your security email
- If the email you want isn’t on your profile yet, add and verify it first
- Go to Settings, then select Security
- Select Security email. On the web, select Edit
- Choose one of your verified emails, then save
You’ll always have exactly one security email. It stays the same no matter which account you’re working in. Your previous security email stays on your profile as a log in email; remove it if you don’t need it anymore.
Admins can’t see or change your security email. The only exception: if an account falls back to your security email for notifications (see Removing an email), that account's admins can see it.
Notification emails
You have a notification email for each account you belong to. It’s where we send the notifications you’ve turned on for that account. Because it’s set per account, you can send each one somewhere different, like your work email for the company you work at and your personal email for a side business.
By default, it’s the email you were invited to that account with. You can change it to any verified email on your profile.
Admins of that account can see it. They can’t see your other emails. An admin chooses this email when they invite you, but after that only you can change it.
Changing a notification email
- Switch to the account you want to change the notification email for
- Go to Settings, then select Notifications
- Select Notification email. On the web, select Edit email
- Choose one of your verified emails, then save
Changing it only affects the account you’re in. Your other accounts keep their own notification emails.
Receipt forwarding (business accounts only)
Receipt forwarding emails and log in emails are separate:
- Adding an email for receipt forwarding doesn’t let you log in with it.
- You can’t add an email as a log in email while it’s being used for receipt forwarding. To use it for logging in, remove it from receipt forwarding first.
Read more about receipt forwarding here.
What admins can see and do
Admins can see only your notification email for that account. They can’t see your security email or your other log in emails. The exception is when you remove your notification email: your security email becomes the fallback, and that account's admins can see it.
Admins choose your email when they invite you. After that, they can’t change it.
If you belong to more than one account
Your emails belong to you, not to an account, so they work across every account you’re part of.
Switching accounts: Log in with any verified email and you’ll land in the account you used last. To switch, select the account switcher in the upper left corner, then select the account you want.
Joining another account: If you’re invited with an email that’s already on your profile, log in and accept the invite. The account is added to your existing profile, and you don’t need a new password. If you’re invited at with an email that isn’t on any Mercury profile yet, you can log in first and add it to your existing profile when you accept, or create a new profile with it.
If you’d like to keep your emails separate but easily switch between Mercury accounts see our Linking and switching Mercury accounts article.
