Automatically match receipts with Gmail

When you connect your Gmail account to Mercury, incoming receipt emails are automatically detected and matched to the correct card transaction. No forwarding or manual uploads needed.

Connect your Gmail account

To set up automatic receipt matching, connect your Gmail account from your profile settings.

  1. Go to Settings > My Profile
  2. Scroll down to "Automatic matching via Gmail"
  3. Click Connect to Gmail
  4. You'll be redirected to Google — sign in and select the account you want to connect
  5. Review the permissions and allow Mercury access — this gives Mercury access to basic details like your name and email so it can detect receipts
  6. Select what Mercury can access, then confirm
  7. You'll be returned to Mercury, where you'll see that automatic matching via Gmail has been enabled

This is also where you can manage connected Gmail accounts — add additional accounts, edit existing ones, or resync any accounts that need attention. Mercury will flag accounts that are successfully connected or require resyncing.

How automatic receipt matching works

Once your Gmail account is connected, Mercury automatically detects receipt emails as they arrive and matches them to the correct card transaction.

To view a matched receipt:

  1. Go to the Transactions page
  2. Click into a transaction
  3. The attached receipt will appear, labeled "auto-added from Gmail"

Find receipts manually

If you want to search for a receipt on a specific transaction, you can trigger a Gmail search directly from Mercury.

  1. Click into a transaction on the Transactions page
  2. Click Find attachments using Gmail
  3. Mercury will open Gmail and run a search using pre-set filters to surface the relevant receipt email

FAQs

What can Mercury see in my Gmail inbox?

Mercury only scans your inbox for receipt-related emails. It does not read, store, or access other email content. The connection uses Google's standard OAuth permissions, which you review and approve during setup.

If you have questions about how Mercury handles your data, refer to Mercury's Privacy Policy (https://mercury.com/legal/privacy) for full details.

Does this work with email providers other than Gmail?

Automatic receipt matching currently works with Gmail only. Other email providers are not supported at this time.

What happens if a receipt doesn't match to a transaction?

If Mercury can't automatically match a receipt, it won't be attached to a transaction. You can still find the receipt manually by clicking Find attachments using Gmail from within the transaction. Mercury will open Gmail with pre-set search filters to help you locate the relevant email.

How do I disconnect my Gmail account?

To disconnect a Gmail account:

  1. Go to Settings > My Profile
  2. Scroll down to "Automatic matching via Gmail"
  3. Select the account you want to remove and follow the prompts to disconnect it

Once disconnected, Mercury will stop scanning that inbox for new receipts. Previously matched receipts will remain attached to their transactions.

How often does Mercury check my inbox?

  • When you first connect Gmail, Mercury scans the last 7 days of emails
  • After that, your inbox is checked once per hour for new receipt emails
