What is a NOC?
When you send a successful ACH payment, Mercury will sometimes receive what’s called a notification of change (NOC) from your recipient’s bank. An NOC tells us that previously valid ACH information has changed and needs to be updated. When Mercury receives an NOC, we make the necessary changes to meet the requirements set by the ACH network.
How do I see the changes?
When Mercury receives an NOC, you’ll be notified by email and in your action bar. While there is no action needed by you, you may want to review your recipient’s updated ACH details.
- From any page in the Mercury dashboard, click the button in the top right of your screen with the bell icon to open your action bar. If you have any unactioned items there will be a red dot on top of the button.
- Look for the notification in the action bar that says your recipient’s ACH details were updated.
- Click View Changes to see the updated ACH details in green.
What are some common NOCs?
These are the most common reasons we receive a notification of change, which can occur individually or in combination with one another:
Incorrect bank account number
The recipient’s account number doesn’t match what the receiving bank expects. This can happen due to a number of reasons, including incorrect data entry, a bank merger, or the changing or closing of a bank branch.
Incorrect routing number
The information for the recipient’s transit/routing number was different from what the receiving bank expected. This can happen if your recipient’s bank is undergoing a merger or recommends a different preferred routing number for its account holder.
Bank account name change
The receiving bank’s name is different from what was in the recipient details. If the name of the bank changes (usually due to a rebranding effort by the bank), you may get this error.
Incorrect payment code
The bank account type for your recipient was different from what their bank expected. This usually translates to changing from savings to checking, personal to business, or vice versa.
Incorrect company name
The name of the company you’re dealing with has changed. You’ll need to update your recipient’s name to reflect the change.
