Understanding check review

Check review is a fraud prevention feature that allows you to review checks written from your check-enabled checking accounts at the moment they are deposited. You’ll have a ~24-hour window to approve or reject each check before any money leaves your account.

Learn more about setting up checkbooks in our overview article.

How check review works

Whenever someone attempts to deposit a check written from one of your check-enabled checking accounts, Mercury flags it and gives you a 24-hour review window.

You’ll be notified of pending checks in a few ways:

  • Email: Includes check number, amount, last four numbers of the associated Mercury checking account, and the number of pending transactions. Multiple checks may be grouped into a single email.
  • Push notifications: You will get in-app push notifications, directing you to the Tasks page.
  • Tasks: Flagged checks appear in your Tasks tab on both desktop and mobile. The task will then link you to the Checkbooks page.

If you don’t act within the review window, the check is automatically accepted or rejected based on your default review action settings (see next section).

In rare instances, a check may be processed the same day, which could shorten or eliminate your chance to review it beforehand. You can always dispute a check after it’s been processed by reaching out to help@mercury.com.

If someone tries to deposit a check from one of your Mercury accounts that is not enabled, it will be returned automatically. Be sure to review all enabled accounts from your Checkbooks > Settings page.

Choosing your default check review action

When you are setting up your Checkbooks page, you will be asked to choose either “approve check” or “reject check” as your default review action.

  • Approve check: Check deposits will be automatically approved after the review window expires
  • Reject check: Check deposits will be automatically rejected after the review window expires

If you want to change your default review action, click the Settings icon in the top right corner of your Checkbooks page.
