Insights is a page within your Mercury account that shows real-time, customizable financial metrics, helping you understand and act on your finances. You can access Insights via the sidebar menu of your Mercury account.
On the Insights page, you will find:
- Overview tab: a quick snapshot of your company’s financial health, including burn, runway, and key spend categories.
- Money in / Money out: tabs with drill downs into inflows and outflows over time, so you can see which customers, vendors, or categories are driving change.
- AI-powered assistant: a built-in assistant that automatically surfaces important trends in your data.
Select Transactions from your left-hand sidebar on web and click Insights to get started.
You can quickly review Money in data by source or category, and Money out data by category, GL code, or merchant type:
You can click into any row to see the pre-filtered list of transactions behind it.
Customizing your Insights data
Use the timeframe selector tool at the top of the page to adjust the Insights page and view data for specific time periods.
Excluding data from Insights
You can exclude certain transactions or transaction types from Insights — such as proceeds from an investment — so they don't skew your day-to-day cash flow data. To get started, click the vertical dots (⋮) at the top of the Insights page to open Insights Settings, where you can also manage notifications, cashflow timeframes, and more:
Comparing time periods
You can use the compare tool in the top right of the page to compare different time periods (e.g., this month vs. last month).
About the AI assistant in Insights
Insights includes a built-in AI-powered financial recap that automatically surfaces the most relevant cashflow changes, helping you interpret your financial data and take action if needed.
You can hover over any insight and “Ask Mercury AI” to dig deeper into the transactions behind it or click the ? in the bottom-right hand corner to start a new conversation.
Keep in mind that the assistant is designed to help with trend analysis - it’s not meant to replace formal accounting reports.
Insights FAQs
What is “runway”?
Runway is the number of months your business can keep operating with the money you currently have, if you keep spending the way you have been.
How do you figure out my cashflow, or burn rate?
We look back at your last few months of activity. By default, we use the last 3 full months of activity, but this can be changed by adjusting the time frame on your insights page in the top right corner.
- Money in: all deposits you received during that time, excluding internal transfers.
- Money out: all withdrawals/expenses during that time, excluding internal transfers.
- We average this to get your monthly burn rate (how much you’re spending, on average, each month).
How do you calculate my runway from that?
We take your current available balance and divide it by your monthly burn rate. This includes any money you have in Treasury.
Why am I not seeing a runway number?
We don’t show a runway number if you’re making money (positive cashflow) or if the time range you’ve selected does not extend until today or the end of the most recent month. That’s because we assume runway is most relevant for you based on recent transaction data.
How are my transactions categorized?
Most transactions are automatically categorized by Mercury. You can always overwrite our suggested category by going into a transaction and selecting a new value from the drop down list. Learn more about auto-categorization here.
