Connecting Mercury to ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools

Connect Mercury to ChatGPT, Claude, or another AI tool that supports Model Context Protocol (MCP) to view account information and take actions like transferring money between accounts, paying existing recipients, and categorizing transactions.

You can request these actions through your AI tool, then review and approve transfers and payments in Mercury before money moves.

This article explains how to connect Mercury, approve requests, and manage your connection.

Connect Mercury to an AI tool

To connect Mercury, add it to your AI tool and authorize access to your account. The steps may vary by tool.

  1. Log in to your AI tool
  2. Find Mercury using one of these options:
  3. Add Mercury from your AI tool
  4. Enter your Mercury email and password, then select Next
  5. Complete login verification and select Continue
  6. On the Review permissions page, confirm which Mercury organization you're connecting and review the requested permissions
  7. Select Authorize to complete the connection

Once connected, try asking your AI tool, "What's my Mercury account balance?" to confirm you're accessing the intended account.

If you've connected Mercury to an AI tool before, you may need to disconnect and reconnect to enable certain actions.

Approve transfers and payments

You can request transfers between your Mercury accounts and payments to existing recipients through your AI tool. You'll need to approve these requests in Mercury before money moves.

  1. Ask your AI tool to initiate a transfer or payment
  2. Review the details in the chat, including the recipient, amount, account, and payment method
  3. Select Approve on Mercury to send the request to Mercury, or Cancel to stop
  4. Open the verification notification in the Mercury app on web or mobile. The approval will also appear in your Tasks page
  5. Review the transfer or payment details in Mercury
  6. Approve or decline the request

Note: Selecting Confirm Request in your AI tool doesn't authorize the payment. You must approve the request in Mercury before it can be initiated.

Approval requests expire after approximately 5 minutes. If yours expires, start a new request through your AI tool.

You can also categorize transactions and update supported transaction metadata through your AI tool. These changes don't require additional approval in Mercury and take effect immediately.
