Agent Controls lets you view and manage the AI tools your team has connected to Mercury. You can see who connected each agent, review its permissions and activity, and disconnect agents when needed.
Who can use Agent Controls
Admins can access Agent Controls in Mercury on the web, including from a mobile browser. Agent Controls isn't currently available in the Mercury mobile app.
What counts as an AI agent
An AI agent is a tool connected to Mercury through Mercury MCP, such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Cursor, or through the Mercury CLI.
Each time someone authorizes a tool, Mercury creates a separate connection. This means the same tool may appear more than once in Agent Controls.
API tokens and other integrations, such as accounting software, don't appear in Agent Controls.
Finding Agent Controls
- Go to Settings
- Under "Security & Controls," select Agent Controls
The "Agent Controls" page has three tabs: Agents, Activity, and Explore.
If no one on your team has connected an agent, the page opens on the Explore tab.
Viewing your team's connected agents
The Agents tab shows a summary of your team's agent connections, including:
- Authorized connections: Total number of authorized agent connections
- Users with agents: Number of team members who have connected agents
- 3rd party tools: Number of third-party tools connected
- All activity: Agent activity across your team
Below the summary, the "Connected agents" table lists each connection and its details:
- Owner: The team member who connected the agent
- Agent: The AI tool and when it was last used or connected
- Permissions: What the agent can view or do in Mercury
Agents can have two permission levels:
- Read only: View information such as accounts, balances, transactions, and receipts
- Read & write: View information, update transaction notes and categories, and prepare payments for approval
Note: Agents with Read & write access can't move money on their own. Payments and transfers they prepare must be approved in Mercury before money moves, and your existing approval rules still apply.
Viewing an agent's details and permissions
Select an agent from the "Connected agents" table to view its details, including:
- Created by: The team member who connected the agent
- Created on: When the connection was created
- Last used: When the agent last accessed Mercury
- Permissions: What the agent can view or do
- Recent activity: Actions the agent has taken
The permissions table compares what the agent's owner can do with what the agent can do, including:
- Viewing accounts and balances
- Downloading statements
- Viewing transactions and receipts
- Viewing recipients
- Editing memos and attaching receipts
- Categorizing transactions
- Drafting payments for approval
An agent's access is limited by its owner's permissions. To reduce an agent's access, you can change the owner's role.
Changing the owner's role also changes what they can do in Mercury and disconnects all of their agents.
Disconnecting an agent
To disconnect an agent from Mercury:
- Open the Agents tab
- Select the agent from the "Connected agents" table
- Select Disconnect
- Select Revoke to confirm
The agent loses access to Mercury immediately.
In some cases, disconnecting an agent also removes the owner's other connections to the same tool. If this applies, you'll see a message before confirming.
Disconnecting an agent doesn't prevent its owner from connecting the tool again later.
Reviewing agent activity
The Activity tab shows actions your team's connected agents have taken in Mercury.
To review all activity across your account, select View all activities to open the Activity Log.
For more information, see [Activity Log article].
Connecting a new AI tool
The Explore tab shows AI tools that work with Mercury MCP, along with how many people on your team have connected each tool.
Supported tools include ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Perplexity, Gemini Enterprise, Grok Bot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Notion, Replit, Claude Code, Codex CLI, and other MCP clients.
To connect a tool:
- Open the Explore tab
- Select the tool you want to connect
- Select Connect and follow the setup instructions
For more information, see Connecting Mercury to ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools.
FAQs
Why did an agent disappear from Agent Controls?
An agent is removed from Agent Controls when:
- Someone disconnects it
- Its owner's role changes
- The permissions associated with its owner's role change
- Its owner is removed from your team
The owner can reconnect the tool if they still have access to Mercury.
Can team members who aren't admins use Agent Controls?
No. Only admins can access Agent Controls. Other team members can disconnect their AI tools through the tools' own settings.
Does connecting an agent change anyone's permissions?
No. An agent operates within its owner's existing permissions and can't do more than its owner can.
