Closing your Mercury account

Our team is here to support you to make closing your account as smooth as possible.

Preparing to close your account

When preparing to close your account, please ensure these actions are taken in advance in order to avoid processing delays:

  1. If you have an IO credit account with an outstanding balance, pay off the balance as soon as possible.
    1. Go to your Credit Account page.
    2. Near the top, select the Pay button.
    3. Select your payment amount and the account you want to pay from, then select Review and Confirm Payment.
  2. If you have a remaining deposit balance, transfer your funds to another financial institution.
    1. You can do this via ACH, wire transfer, or physical check, depending on account eligibility, or via linked account. Keep in mind that this process can take several days depending on the method you choose, so you’ll need to wait until those transfers have settled to close the account. If the account is closed with a positive balance, funds will be sent via check to either the shipping or legal address on file.
    2. If you have investments in Mercury Treasury, you need to liquidate the funds and transfer them out of the Treasury account, then transfer them elsewhere via ACH or wire.
  3. Ensure all pending incoming and outgoing transactions are settled. Any incoming payments to your account after it is closed will be canceled.
  4. Migrate any recurring transactions to another financial institution and update your vendors. You can view your current recurring transactions here, as well as your card subscriptions here to see what you will need to update.
  5. Download relevant account statements. All account statements will be available for you to access upon login even after your account is closed, but we recommend downloading necessary statements before then for your own reference.

Requesting account closure

You can initiate the account closure process from your Mercury dashboard as long as you meet the following criteria:

  • You’re a beneficial owner on the account.
  • The account has no pending transactions.
  • The total Mercury balance is $0.00, which means you’ve transferred all funds out of checking, savings, and other accounts. Please see the previous section, “Preparing to close your account” for more details.

Once the above criteria are met, here’s how to initiate the process of closing your Mercury account:

  1. Log in to your Mercury account on the web.
    1. This flow is not currently available through the mobile app – it must be initiated through the web dashboard.
  2. Go to Settings > Company Profile.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page where it says Close Account and click Start Request.
  4. Review the information provided, then click Continue. If you still have a balance or any pending transactions, we’ll let you know that you can’t proceed.
  5. You’ll be asked to provide a reason for closing the account and given a chance to share any feedback about your Mercury experience.
  6. Finally, you can review your selections, and then submit your request by clicking Request to Close.
  7. Once submitted, your request will be reviewed by our team within 2 business days and the account will be closed. We’ll send you an email confirming everything’s good to go once it’s officially closed.
